FALL 2024 THEME:
DEATH
EVERYTHING HAS A BEGINNING, AND AN END.
Death of a loved one, death of an idea, death of an ego. Death is all around us, in many forms. In this issue we encourage artists to contemplate how they interact with death and what forms of death they have experience with. We hope that artists and writers feel empowered to explore the theme in whatever way feels appropriate to them— whether it is literal or more abstract.
Submission Guidelines
For the purposes of these guidelines, the term artist includes any author, creator, or visual artist who may wish to submit to the zine.
Artists must be at least 18 years old to submit, and live in Alaska.
Artists can submit up to five pieces. Each one will be considered individually, and acceptance of one piece has no bearing on the other pieces.
A written submission should not exceed more than 750 words.
A visual submission should not exceed more than a six page spread. Each page of the zine will be 4.25 in x 5.5 in, so a two page spread would be 8.5 x 11 in. Please keep in mind that editors will need the ability to adjust for margins and print formatting, as well as leave room for the title and any description of the piece you wish to include.
Artists can choose to submit any combination of written or visual pieces as they see fit. The 750 word limit on written pieces and six page spread on visual pieces applies to each single submission. So if an artist chooses to submit 3 written pieces, each one can be up to 750 words for a total of 2250 words.
If editing your piece would mean compromising its integrity, please submit it anyways. The editorial board is not trying to be overly strict in a way that will compromise the ability of people to submit their work.
Artists should indicate with each piece whether or not they are open to edits. If an artist wishes that their pieces be accepted either as is or not at all, that is understandable! Requesting this does not affect the likelihood of a piece being accepted, just helps to clarify how editors should approach the piece.
Artists should provide a brief biography to be included if they are selected.
Submissions do not need to be new work. Past work and new work are welcome all the same! Similarly any genre is welcome!
The publication is self-funded by the editorial board. We are only able to offer limited compensation for the selected pieces. In the future, we hope to be able to pay artists more for their contributions. For now, the following pay scale is offered to artists:
$35 to an artist if one piece is selected for publication
A total of $45 to an artist if two pieces are selected publication
A total of $55 to an artist if three pieces are selected publication
A total of $65 to an artist if four pieces are selected publication
A total of $75 to an artist if five pieces are selected publication
Publication of a piece does not affect the ownership of the piece. All rights associated with each piece remain with the artist. Acceptance of space in Year Round Queer zine means the artist consents to distribution as a part of the Year Round Queer zine, in promotional material (i.e. shown when trying to get submissions for the next edition) and remaining in an archive of the zine.
Submission of a piece does not mean consent to publication. If a piece is accepted, the artist will be contacted to confirm they consent to publication and answer any questions they may have. If, at that point, the artist no longer wants to participate, that is their right.
Accepted artists will be provided one printed copy of the zine upon its publication. Once artists are accepted, the editorial board will get their mailing address to send them a paper copy. They will also be given a digital edition via email.
Submissions are open until July 31,2024. (But reach out if you need an extension— we are flexible.)
